02 settembre RNC theme songsPolitics and music make strange bedfellows...
Tonight, at the Republican National Convention, the "amp'd" music prior to Pres. Bush's speech via satelite came from AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" -- the sample lyrics are posted below:
(Thunder) (x10) I was caught In the middle of a railroad track (Thunder) I looked 'round, And I knew there was no turning back (Thunder) My mind raced And I thought what could I do? (Thunder) And I knew There was no help, no help from you (Thunder) Sound of the drums Beatin' in my heart The thunder of guns! Tore me apart You've been - thunderstruck! Rode down the highway Broke the limit, we hit the ton Went through to Texas, yeah Texas And we had some fun We met some girls, Those dancers who gave us good times Broke all the rules, played all the fools Yeah, yeah, they, they, they blew our minds And I was shakin' at the knees Could I come again please. Yeah the ladies were too kind You've been - thunderstruck, thunderstruck Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck Yeah Oh, thunderstruck, yeah Now we're shaking at the knees Could I come again please. Thunderstruck, thunderstruck Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah Said yeah, it's alright We're! Doing fine Yeah, it's alright We're! Doing fine So fine Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah, Thunderstruck, thunderstruck, thunderstruck Whoa baby, baby, thunderstruck You've been thunderstruck, thunderstruck Thunderstruck, thunderstruck, thunderstruck You've been thunderstruck 04 luglio Rockets Red Glare...I have to confess, I'm not much of a flag-waving kinda guy. I don't often wear my patriotism on my sleeve...much like I don't wear my religion or politics on my sleeve. I guess I wouldn't make a good evangelists in any field. I came to the conclusion that "evangelists" are great marketers for their product...to the point where they are willing to say their "product is the best." And to recruit others to buy your product. I'm just way to cynical or modest or unsure to preach to others and convince them to invest in whatever I'm selling. Heck, half of everything is crap, right? Even if the glass IS half-full, the other half can't be much good. So evangelist are either blind to, or down-right ignore, the crappy half of their product. And who wants to talk someone into buying a product that is only half-good??
So, I practice my faith the way I choose to, but my ethics & value system is based just as much on my experiences as they are based in biblical scripture. I can't really tell anyone the "best" way to live or to worship...cause I'm still trying to find the best way myself! And if my path leads to the "Crappy-Half" forest, I would rather not be responsible for bringing someone else with me. Sure, it would be nice to see a friendly face, as all battles are easier with a friend by your side. But a guilty conscience is a heavy burden to bear.
So as with my faith and way of life, I sit here on this 04 July 2007, with the gray skies and relentless rain, watching History Channel marathons on US Presidents and the American Revolution. AMC has a marathon of war movies..."Tora!Tora!Tora!" and "Patton" so far. I wasn't raised with war stories from my father or my grandfather, so my love for history came mostly from textbooks and documentaries. Maybe that's why my patriotism can only be viewed through the prism of global history and, sadly, even through the fog of politics. Can one honestly evangalize to the world that the United States is the best product on the market knowing that inheirent within it are flaws? If so, how?
I guess to me it's a way of staying objective.
